KDOL launches new programs providing additional Kansas labor market data

New data provides insight to online job postings and regional labor market information

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Labor announces the launch of two new information sources; Help Wanted Online (HWOL) and Regional Focus. These programs will be updated with new data each month at the same time as the monthly Kansas Labor Report to provide current information about the Kansas economy. The data can be accessed through the Kansas Labor Information Center (KLIC) website at https://klic.dol.ks.gov/

.

"This new information will serve to connect the job seeker with the available jobs. This is the bottom line in getting people back to work," said Kansas Secretary of Labor Karin Brownlee. "These tools will help identify the types of jobs available and where within the State the openings are located."

According to the survey of more than 6,000 Kansas employers, the majority of the state’s green jobs are in the area of energy efficiency, while the area expected to see the largest increase in jobs over the next few years is renewable energy. A green job is defined as one that produces a green product or provides a green service in one of the following five core green-related areas: producing renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, agriculture and natural resource conservation, pollution prevention and environmental cleanup, and clean transportation and fuels.

The Regional Focus data combines information from a large variety of Labor Market Information programs into one easy-to-use site. The data is presented for each local area including five major topic areas; unemployment activity, employment and wage data, current job openings, employment projections and labor mobility. The data will include the following information for the most current time period available: unemployment rates, initial claims for UI, employment by industry, the top 10 employers, entry level, mean, and experienced wage rates, online job openings, projected demand by occupation, and commuting patterns.

"When developing workforce development policies it is important to remember that there are unique labor markets across the state of Kansas. Thus, looking at regional data is more relevant and provides a more practical, usable set of labor intelligence for those working with workforce development. We hope that our users find the HWOL and Regional Focus information useful for this reason," said the Director of Labor Market Information Services, Inayat Noormohmad.

HWOL provides a measure of labor demand by offering a comprehensive listing of unique, online advertised job vacancies from over 1,200 internet job boards and newspaper websites nationwide. The data excludes duplicate advertisements, ads on corporate websites and ads that appear in written form only; e.g. newspapers, magazines, etc. Data is separated out by specific local areas, as well as the state of Kansas as a whole.

In addition to the number of online job openings, HWOL provides details associated with each ad, such as location, occupation, wages, etc. It also provides information on which websites account for the largest share of online ads for a particular occupation, as well as which employers account for the greatest number of online job openings. Each month HWOL data will include the following information as it pertains to the most recently completed month:

  • the top 10 online job openings (for all jobs and green jobs)
  • a comparison of labor supply and labor demand
  • detailed information on the wages, education requirements and knowledge, skills and abilities of the five occupations with the most online job openings.
