The Kansas Department of Labor KDOL) is seeking an unclassified Applications Developer II to provide mainframe support to the Kansas unemployment insurance system. Analytical and problem solving skills will be used to design and implement effective solutions in an ever-changing environment.

Duties Include:

  • Developing and modifying application software.
  • Identifying and documenting application requirements.
  • Preparing system designs and detailed specifications from which application software will be written.
  • Coding, testing, debugging, maintaining and documenting software.
  • Work may involve several information systems areas and platforms such as COBOL, JCL, CICS, Siebel 8.0, MVS, ASP.NET and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • May perform all aspects of complex web application development and maintenance.

Minimum Requirements:  Successful completion of 18 hours in computer science coursework or certification and one year experience coding, testing, and debugging application programs or two years experience coding, testing, debugging, and documenting application programs. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications:  Highly qualified candidates will have 2+ years of relevant experience plus a BS/BA in a computer programming related field.

How You Will Be Evaluated: Once you complete and submit your application package, your application will be reviewed to ensure you meet the minimum requirements, and also will be evaluated and rated based on your ability to demonstrate the following minimum competency factors:

  • Ability to design, develop and modify software systems, using scientific analysis and mathematical models.
  • Ability to define the goals of the system and devise flow charts and diagrams describing logical operational steps of programs.
  • Ability to modify existing software to correct errors, allow it to adapt to new hardware, or to improve performance.
  • Ability to compile and write documentation of program development and revisions.
  • Ability to conduct trial runs of programs and software applications.
  • Ability to perform systems analysis and programming tasks to maintain and control the use of computer systems software.
  • Ability to write, analyze, review and rewrite programs or software packages to meet the specific needs of the agency.
  • Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others in order to provide information, assistance, or instructions to the general public.
