Job Vacancies in Kansas

Local Area I 2007 Edition

Kansas employers in Local Area I reported approximately 11,518 job vacancies during the second quarter of 2007. The average number of individuals unemployed in this area during this time was 11,482. This translates to an average of one unemployed person per job vacancy, the lowest among all Local Areas. This indicates there is a high demand for workers in Local Area I.

The majority of these openings were full-time permanent positions. Furthermore, the results indicate a job vacancy rate of 4.9 percent or almost five vacancies for every 100 filled positions.

  • Job Vacancies by Industry

    • The Trade, Transportation and Utilities industry reported the largest number of job vacancies with approximately 3,212 openings and a 6.2 percent job vacancy rate.

      Education and Health Services reported the second largest number of vacancies with approximately 2,668 openings.


  • Job Vacancies by Employer Size

    • Forty-five percent of all the openings in Local Area I, approximately 5,155, were with smaller employers, ranging from five to 49 employees. Employers of this size also reported the highest job vacancy rate of 5.2 percent.

      The smallest size employers, 1 to 4 employees, reported the least number of job vacancies and also offered the lowest average minimum and maximum wages among the employer four size classes.


  • Job Vacancies by Occupation

    • Demand for workers was spread across all major occupational groups. The Transportation and Material Moving group reported the most job vacancies, approximately 1,780, followed by the Construction and Extraction and Sales and Related occupational groups with 1,288 and 1,213 job vacancies.

      In terms of occupations, Hand Laborers and Freight, Stock and Material Movers had the most job vacancies in the area with 987. Retail Salespersons followed with 493; Nursing Aides, Orderlies and Attendants with 466; Cashiers with 438; and Waiters and Waitresses with 411.


  • Starting Wage Offer

    • The average minimum wage offered in Local Area I was $10.72, making it the lowest among all Local Areas. Thirty-six percent of openings in this area offered minimum starting wages between $6.00 and $8.99.

      The median wage offer is the value in the middle when all wage offers are arranged from highest to lowest. Overall, the Local Area I median minimum wage offer was $9.00 per hour and the median maximum wage offer was $10.50 per hour.


  • Duration of Job Vacancies

    • Wages increased with the length of time a job had been open. The majority of job vacancies in this area were reported as "always being open," followed closely by those reported as being "open for less than 30 days." Registered Nurses and Nursing Aides, Orderlies and Attendants were on the list of occupations that were open more than 60 days or were always open, indicating a strong demand for these occupations.


  • Education

    • The average minimum and maximum wages offered increased with the level of education required. Approximately 10 percent of the job openings in this area required a bachelor's or advanced degree. The top 10 occupations with the most vacancies that required a bachelor's degree were mostly teaching or health care-related. Of the occupations requiring a bachelor's degree, Registered Nurses had the most job vacancies.
