Job Vacancies in Kansas

Local Area II 2007 Edition

Kansas employers in Local Area II reported approximately 9,928 job vacancies during the second quarter of 2007. The average number of individuals unemployed in this area during this time was 12,456. This translates to an average of 1.25 unemployed workers per job vacancy, indicating a labor market with a high demand for workers.

The majority of these openings were full-time, permanent positions. When compared to other areas, Local Area II reported the lowest percentage of full-time permanent job openings. The results indicate a job vacancy rate of 4.1 percent or approximately four vacancies for every 100 filled positions.

  • Job Vacancies by Industry

    • The Education and Health Services industry reported the largest number of job vacancies with 2,514 openings.

      Trade, Transportation and Utilities reported the second highest number of vacancies with 1,839 openings.

      Public Administration reported the third highest number of vacancies with 1,360 openings.

      The Other Services industry paid the highest wages among the 11 major industries, paying an average minimum wage of $18.75 an hour. This industry includes firms engaged in providing services not elsewhere specified, including repairs, religious activities, grant-making and advocacy.


  • Job Vacancies by Employer Size

    • Employers with more than 250 employees reported the largest number of vacancies in this area with 3,644 openings.


  • Job Vacancies by Occupation

    • The occupational groups with the most job vacancies in Local Area II were Office and Administrative Support with 1,676 openings and Food Preparation and Serving-Related with 1,245 openings. Farming, Fishing and Forestry related occupations reported the highest job vacancy rate of 22.4 percent.

      In terms of occupations, Customer Service Representatives had the largest number of vacancies with 461 openings. Nearly half of the total vacancies in the area were represented in the top 25 occupations with the most job vacancies.


  • Starting Wage Offer

    • Wages offered for job openings ranged from a minimum wage of $9.37 for vacancies which were always open to $20.51, the maximum wage for occupations which were open for 60 days or more.

      Nearly 27 percent of the job vacancies reported in this area paid at least $12.00 per hour. Fifty-eight percent of all the job vacancies offered starting wages ranging from $6.00 to $11.99. The distribution of wages offered was similar to the other areas and the state overall.

      Wages offered for job vacancies in Local Area II were below the statewide level in all of the education categories. The average minimum starting wage offer for job openings requiring no education ($7.93) was the lowest of all the Local Areas.

      The median wage offer represents the value in the middle when all wage offers are arranged from highest to lowest. Overall, the Local Area II median minimum wage offer was $9.00 per hour and the median maximum wage offer was $10.00 per hour.


  • Duration of Job Vacancies

    • A majority of all of job vacancies in Local Area II had been open for less than 30 days or were jobs that were always open. Registered Nurses and Nursing Aides, Orderlies and Attendants were on the list of occupations that were open more than 60 days or were always open in Local Area II and also in each of the other Local Areas, indicating there is a strong demand statewide for these individuals.


  • Education

    • More than 69 percent of the job openings in Local Area II required no education or only a high school diploma or GED, compared to less than 65 percent statewide. Approximately 16 percent of the job openings in this area required a bachelor's or advanced degree.

      The top 10 occupations with the most vacancies that required a bachelor's degree in this area were mostly teaching related. The occupation Registered Nurses was on this list and had more job vacancies than any other occupation.
