Kansas employers in Local Area III reported approximately 15,662 job vacancies during the second quarter of 2007. The average number of individuals unemployed in this area during this time was 19,243. This translates to an average of 1.23 unemployed people for every job vacancy, indicating a labor market with high demand for workers.
The majority of these openings were full-time, permanent positions. Furthermore, the results indicate a job vacancy rate of 3.9 percent or almost four vacancies for every 100 filled positions.
- Job Vacancies by Industry
The Trade, Transportation and Utilities industry reported the largest number of openings (3,633), closely followed by Education and Health Services with 3,626 openings.
The Construction industry reported the highest average wage offer ranging from $25.57 to $31.07 per hour. Some of the openings reported in this survey may represent seasonal demands that existed at the time of the survey, such as construction workers.
- Job Vacancies by Employer Size
Local Area III reported the largest number of vacancies (approximately 5,931) among employers with 50 to 249 employees.
- Job Vacancies by Occupation
The Office and Administrative Support occupational group reported the largest number of job vacancies with 2,042 openings. This group offered an average minimum wage of $11.40 per hour and an average maximum wage offer of 12.41 per hour.
The Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver occupation reported the largest number of job vacancies with 924 openings with average minimum wage offer of $20.68.
- Starting Wage Offer
More than 36 percent of the job vacancies reported in this area paid at least $12.00 per hour, the largest percentage of all Local Areas. Thirteen percent of all openings paid $21.00 or more which was significantly more than the state average.
The distribution of wages in this area differed from the other Local Areas. On average, in Local Area III more employers offered higher wages than in the other areas. This supports evidence from the 2007 Kansas Wage Survey, which reported the majority of the occupations in the Kansas City MSA, which includes Local Area III, paid higher wages than the state overall. However, there were a significant number of respondents (25 percent) who did not report wages for the vacancies.
The median wage offer represents the value in the middle when all wage offers are arranged from highest to lowest. Overall, the Local Area III median minimum wage offer was $11.50 per hour and the median maximum wage offer was $12.50 per hour.
- Duration of Job Vacancies
The survey showed that a majority of all job vacancies in Local Area III had been open for less than 30 days or were jobs that were always open. Registered Nurses and Nursing Aides, Orderlies and Attendants were on the list of occupations that were open more than 60 days or were always open, indicating a strong demand for these individuals. There were additional health care-related occupations that were open for more than 60 days ore reported as "always open" in Local Area III.
- Education
Local Area III reported the lowest percentage of job vacancies that required no education or only a high school diploma or GED, for a total of just over 57 percent, below the 65 percent statewide. The area reported significantly higher wages offered for all educational categories than in the other Local Areas. Approximately 21 percent of the job openings in Local Area III required a bachelor's or advanced degree. The occupation Registered Nurses was one of the top 10 occupations with the most vacancies that required a bachelor´s degree and had more vacancies than any other occupation on the list.
