According to February 2008 estimates, Kansas businesses added approximately 18,200 jobs in the last year, a 1.3% increase. All metropolitan areas and 10 of 11 major industries added jobs during the year.
Government, particularly local government, reported the highest gains over the year, adding 5,900 jobs. The increase of jobs in this area stemmed from the large amount of snow fall in Kansas this winter, and the extra staff needed to help with snow removal.
Professional and business services industry reported the 2nd largest gain of 3,100 jobs over the year. Most of these gains were in the Administrative Support services sector.
The February unemployment rate was 4.0 percent, down from last month and last year. The unemployment rate was 4.3 percent last month and 4.4 percent last year. Kansas’ unemployment rate continues to remain below the national average which was 4.8 percent in February.

"The Construction and Manufacturing industries reported the third highest gains over the year. . .”
Labor Economist Inayat Noormohmad
"The Construction and Manufacturing industries reported the third highest gains over the year adding 2,800 jobs each. We are continuing to see growth in these areas particularly in aerospace production in Manufacturing. This is an indication that employment in Kansas has so far not been affected by the slowdown experienced at the national level." Download audio clip
