Boiler Safety Inspection Unit
The Boiler Safety Unit is responsible for the
inspection of all boilers used in private or public businesses.
The following is a list of information and services provided
by the Boiler Safety Unit:
- Performs first inspection on all new installations of boilers
and pressure vessels requiring inspection under the Kansas Boiler Safety Act
K.S.A. 44-913 et.seq.
- Issues certificates of inspection.
- Hot water supply boilers (water heaters) with a storage capacity of 85 gallons and above or any size with a rating of 200,000 BTUH
or more require inspection.
- All boilers and pressure vessels are required to be constructed to a recognized code of construction (ASME) and be registered with
the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NB). EXCEPTION: Hot water supply boilers under 120 gallons and/or 200,000
BTUH are not required to be registered with the (NB).
- New installation of boilers and pressure vessels must be reported to this office by the installer within 72 hours of completion.
- Used boilers and pressure vessels must be inspected and reported to this office before moved into the state. They shall be registered
with the (NB) and are required to be inspected by a state inspector before placing in operation.
- Portable boilers must be reported to this office before installation and inspected by a state inspector before placing in operation.
