The annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses provides statistics on work-related injuries and illnesses in Kansas. These statistics include the number and frequency of injuries and illnesses by industry. The survey, conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), is designed as a tool for promoting efforts to make Kansas workplaces safer and healthier.

Each year approximately 3,500 randomly selected Kansas business establishments participate in this survey. Individuals that are self-employed, farms with fewer than 11 employees, private households and government agencies are not included in the survey.

History

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 implemented regulations requiring most private industry employers to maintain records and prepare reports on work-related injuries and illnesses.

The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was delegated the responsibility of developing and maintaining an effective statistical program to collect, compile, and analyze occupational safety and health data. Since 1972, the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses has reported annually the number of nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in private industry and the frequency of those incidents.

With the 1992 survey, BLS began collecting additional information on the more seriously work-related injuries and illnesses, like those that require time away from work, in the form of worker and case characteristics.
