According to July 2008 estimates, Kansas businesses added 5,200 jobs in the last year, a 0.4 percent increase. Six of the 11 major industries added jobs in the last year.
Government added 3,100 jobs in the last year a 1.3 percent increase. Most of the gains in this area were primarily due to additions in local government.
The professional and business services sector reported gains of 2,200 jobs over the year, a 1.5 percent increase. The majority of these new jobs were in the administrative support services sector which includes employment placement services.
The educational and healthcare services sector added 2,000 jobs in the last year, a 1.2 percent increase with growth throughout the sector.
Although Kansas reported over-the-year job gains, total nonfarm employment dropped 19,500 jobs over the month, a 1.4 percent decrease. The largest loss was 18,600 jobs in government with seasonal declines at local schools occurring in the summer.
The July unemployment rate was 4.9 percent, up from 4.4 percent last month and 4.5 percent last year. Kansas’ unemployment rate continues to remain below the national average which was 6.0 percent in July.
