Workers Compensation BoardSearching and Accessing Board DecisionsBoard Decisions
Search the Board Decisions using keywords, for example: preexisting; disability.
Search Options: By Docket Number The download directory of Board decisions is at http://www.dol.ks.gov/WCBoard/WP/. The Board's decisions are listed there by docket number (see also Difficulty Searching the Download Directory, below). Simply scroll down the list of docket numbers, arranged in ascending numerical order, select the desired decision, and choose to either view online, print, or download and save the file. In some cases, when there is more than one decision file on a given case (generally when the case has been referred back to the Board), there will be more than one decision file. Take note of the file numbers immediately above and below your desired number to see if this is the case. The search engine at the top of this page, or the bottom of the Board Main page, can also be used to search for the desired decision; simply type in the docket number. In this case, if there are multiple decision files on a given case, all files with the entered docket number will be called up and displayed. If a particular decision you want is not listed, call the Workers Compensation Research Unit (785) 296-6762 to have the decision faxed or mailed to you. Search Options: By Case Name or Keyword Use the search engine at the top of this page, or the bottom of the Board Main page, to search for the desired decision. Type the case name (or a specific keyword or keywords*) in the search text box and select the search button. You will get a return page of results similar to that of a standard Web search engine, with docket numbers as links to the decision files. Use the links to take you to the full-text version of the Board decision. The decision file can then be read online, printed, or downloaded and saved. * If you enter more than one word, the search engine will look for files containing any of the words entered, regardless of whether any of the rest of the words are found. To look for files containing the term work disability, for example, enter the two words enclosed by quotation marks ("work disability"). Follow the Example Search Queries link immediately below the search engine text box for more help with entering search terms. Difficulty Searching the Download Directory You may experience difficulty conducting a search on the download directory page (http://www.dol.ks.gov/WCBoard/WP/), depending on the type of browser and operating system you have. Windows and Internet Explorer (IE) versions from 1995 on will show the filenames (docket numbers) in the directory in numerical order. Older versions of Windows or IE, and some other operating systems and browsers, may display the filenames in the directory in a randomly sorted sequence; there may be other effects on the display of the directory in your browser as well. In such cases, you may have better success using a "Find on this page" type of search option (similar to Edit...Find on this page in Windows Explorer) in your browser's menu, or you can go back to this site's search engine and enter a docket number. If You Open the File and It Is Unreadable The Board decisions are saved in a WordPerfect format. If you are using Word, the decisions should open for viewing but some formatting may be lost. If the decision narrative is not very "clean" (if you get unrecognizable characters such as []), Word is having difficulty translating certain formatting or character codes in the document file. If this happens, double-click the desired file in your browser window, but instead of choosing the "open file" option, save the file to your computer's hard drive, your directory on your office's network (if applicable), or a floppy or zip drive. Next, use your operating system file manager, such as Windows My Computer, to find the file on the drive/disk to which you saved the file. Select the file, single-click to enable renaming the file, and change the filename extension to .doc (e.g., 177894.doc). WordPerfect's default filename extension is .wpd; Word uses .doc. Then, use the "open file" commands in your word processor to open the file. You may still get some gibberish but hopefully not enough to make the narrative unreadable.
