Do I have to file a weekly certification every week?

Yes, you should file a weekly certification every week you are unemployed or working reduced hours. If you miss a week, it will create a break in your claim, and you will need to submit a new application before you can continue filing weekly certifications.
Why can't I file my weekly certifications?

It has been more than 14 days since you last filed for benefits or submitted a weekly certification for payment, and no activity, such as filing a weekly certification, has been reported.

If you have worked since your last application, file a new application online. If you have not worked since your last application, contact the Contact Center for assistance.
When should I file for unemployment?

You should file for unemployment benefits as soon as you become unemployed, but only after your last day of work is over. Your claim starts the week you file, not the week you became unemployed. If you delay filing, you may miss weeks you could have claimed. We do not pay benefits for past weeks if you did not file on time.
How can I add to or correct my answer on the application?

If you have already submitted your application, you cannot change your answers or add information online. You can send additional information by faxing it to 785-296-3249. If you made a significant error, such as not reporting earnings or leaving out an employer, you will need to contact the Contact Center to have it corrected.
What happens after I file an application for unemployment?

After you submit your application, you will receive a Decision on Benefit Amount based on your reported wages.

This notice will show whether you have earned enough wages to establish an unemployment claim. If your wages on the Decision on Benefit Amount are incorrect or missing, please contact the Contact Center for assistance.

You will be asked to provide check stubs, 1099s, W-2 forms, or other supporting documents. Receiving a Decision on Benefit Amount does not guarantee that you will receive benefits. Additional information may be required from you and/or your employer to determine your eligibility.
Why did I receive an Identity Verification form from KDOL?

We need additional information to verify your identity. We will need a copy of your Social Security card and your driver’s license or other state-issued photo ID. Legible copies of the documents should be sent by the due date on the form.

You will be ineligible to receive benefits until we receive the necessary documentation.
How do you check my identity?

Your name and Social Security number are sent through a secure transaction to the Social Security Administration for verification.

Unemployment Insurance (UI) is a state-operated insurance program designed to provide temporary and partial financial assistance to replace lost wages to Kansas workers when they are unemployed through no fault of their own and meet the requirements. If you meet the eligibility requirements of the law, you are entitled to some income while you are looking for a job.

This step-by-step guide will take you through everything you need to know, understand and do while filing your unemployment insurance claim.

Weekly Certifications

IMPORTANT: We've made a few visual enhancements to some screens in this video to improve readability and the overall learning experience. Because of this, certain screenshots may look slightly different from what you see in the live application, although the processes demonstrated remain the same.

IMPORTANT: You must continue filing your weekly certifications while you are unemployed. If you experience difficulties filing your weekly certifications, you must call the Contact Center for assistance right away. If you do not report the issue at the time it occurs, you may not receive credit for that week.

File your weekly certification every week, starting on the first Sunday after you submit your unemployment application. The unemployment week runs from Sunday through Saturday.

For example, if you apply on a Tuesday, file your first weekly certification the following Sunday. You can file any day of the week, but filing earlier in the week can help you get paid faster.

NOTE: You will not receive a benefit payment until the weekly certification has been filed. If you do not file a weekly certification within 14 days, you will not be able to file the weekly certification. Your claim will become inactive, and you will have to file another application to re-open your unemployment.

If you are not able to file your weekly certifications online, you can also use our automated phone system.

Tips for Filing Your Weekly Certifications with the Virtual Assistant

You can file for unemployment benefits in any state where you earned wages. If you worked in more than one state, those wages can be combined to process your claim.

IMPORTANT: You can only have a claim in one state at a time. Once you file in a state, that state handles your claim.

If you earned wages in another state—or worked for the military or federal government—during your base period, we will request those wage records for you.

After we receive all wage information, we will send you an updated Decision on Benefit Amount Notice. This notice will show the wages used to calculate your claim and the amount you may receive if you meet all eligibility requirements. If you do not have enough wages in Kansas to qualify and we need wages from another state, your payments may be delayed until that information is received.
