During the General Session, Steve Benjamin and P. Kelly Donley will discuss Vocational Rehabilitation and Work Disability Defense.
Benjamin will provide information about the positive impacts of providing vocational rehabilitation services to individuals with work-related injuries and discuss available services, including job placement and re-education.
Donley will review the use of vocational rehabilitation experts to affect PPD and PTD under new statutory caps.
Dallas Rakestraw and Jonathan Voegeli will present two sessions of Case Law Statutory and Regulatory Updates September 22.
They will discuss case law updates and decisions from an overview perspective of claimant and respondent attorneys. Attendees will analyze case decisions and the impact they have on claimants, respondents, insurance carriers and third-party administrators.
L.J. Leatherman will present an ethics course September 22 titled The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend: The Ethical Prosecution of Bad Faith in Kansas, highlighting the ethical pitfalls of litigating bad faith insurance claims in Kansas.
Kathleen Selzler Lippert will present an ethics course, Trust Jeopardy: Clicking Your Heels Won’t Fix Bad Decisions, Wednesday, September 23. This is an interactive audience-driven CLE. In Alex Trebek style, attendees will compete for points using their knowledge of KRPC 1.5, KRPC 1.15 and disciplinary case law.
September 22 at 1:20 p.m., Ryan Boswell will present Workers Compensation Basics. Attendees will learn the basics of workers compensation regulations and statutes, including history, compliance and coverage, exemptions, reporting requirements, elections and types of benefits.
During the session at 2:45 p.m., Ryan will have a presentation on Advanced Workers Compensation for attendees who possess a prior working knowledge of the Kansas Workers Compensation Act including an understanding of Temporary and Permanent Disability (TTD, TPD, PPD, PTD) and the basics of compliance, reporting and benefits. Content will include a more in-depth discussion of topics such as hearing process, contractor versus employee, verifying coverage, penalties and others.
Julian Wells will present Catastrophic Injury with Upper Limb Involvement in the session September 22. Attendees will gain insight into current technologies and treatment approaches for injured workers with upper limb loss. Emphasis will be placed on effective collaboration with the care team to communicate and establish functional goals, ensure implementation of the care plan and demonstrate successful outcomes. Case studies will be incorporated to highlight the complexity and specialized needs of this highly involved patient population.
